First time at Soco for brunch and I enjoyed every minute of my visit. I sat at the bar and Nate (awesome bartender) took great care of me. The food and drinks were excellent & satisfying. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the staff were very welcoming. Nate made one of my favorites, old fashioned but pancake style with a piece of bacon. It was soooo delicious. The bacon, eggs, and cheese shrimp grits & smoked fish & potato cakes were yummy. I will for sure, be back during my next visit to Orlando., I came here with some friends for a nice brunch one Saturday morning recently. We had our reservations, got seated, and got to work. Beautiful space right down the street from the beautiful Lake Eola. Service was impeccable. Server was a little odd, but I like odd ones. Overall, we were very well taken care of.
We started off with a biscuit platter with some biscuits, three spreads, some butter. It was great! Warm, tender, flakey biscuits. Each spread was a huge pop of fruit flavor and the butter was room temperature, as it should be, and was very buttery.
Then came the Soco-Style “Chicken and Dumplings” (Chicken Breast, Lobster Dumplings, Local Mushrooms, Edamame, Soy Butter). Very interesting dish. The dumplings were very delicious with the succulent lobster within, the umami from the mushrooms was good, too. Solid, but a lot of softness. I would have liked to see something even a little crunchy.
Thenn came the “Southern Style” Eggs Benedict (English Muffin, Fried Green Tomato, Benton’s Country Ham, Creole Hollandaise). Another solid dish. Crisp and well-cooked tomato. I wanted a little more oomf from that Creole hollandaise, but I know they have to appeal to the mass audience.
Finally was the Chicken -N- French Toast (Maple Sorghum Butter, Almond Granola, Pink Peppercorn Whipped Cream). Every component of this dish was done and out to me, except the chicken. They were still cooking it while I was watching my whipped cream melt on my French toast. Lol.
Overall, this place was pretty good. A few missteps here and there, but if you book brunch here, you will have a good time!, Tried SOCO as a new Friday option. Pleasant atmosphere but we were placed beside another diner while restaurant was empty.
Food was good. Had the vibe of a food network type of feel. Southern foods reimagined. Service was good. Prices were what were expected from a restaurant trying to be a destination/special occasion., Soco Thornton Park was pretty so-so as a restaurant. First of all, the menu needs to be updated online. They do not have daily specials, they have constant mid normals.
The chicken was good, the prices are outrageous. I really spent 11 dollars on 4 tiny Mac and Cheese balls. The braised pork was good. They didn't even have any lamb ready. And for the chicharrones it was more dip than pork. And the strawberry bread pudding tasted like dipping a slice of bread in water and then leaving it out to dry.
The waiter barely showed up either and didn't follow up when I asked for refills of water and wifi passwords. He couldn't have forgotten either because he only had 2 tables and staff he loved talking to. Maybe they hire off looks instead of brains...
Overall, while they told me they are redoing the menu, they might need a redo internally as well.
Go to Jinya Ramen Shop across the street., Great southern dishes! Biscuits are amazing! Meatloaf special was good, but I think the fried chicken would have been a better choice.
